20mph speed limit in Southampton

Southampton City Council will be introducing a new 20mph speed limit in the Maybush area in the west of the city.

The pilot, which will be specifically within the Lower Brownhill Road, Green Lane and Wimpson Lane area will commence in the latter half of November.

The introduction of the pilot follows a resident consultation exercise which took place over the summer, the results of which showed that 80% of the 575 respondents were in favour of the introduction of a 20mph speed limit.

Councillor Jacqui Rayment, cabinet member for environment and transport, said: “There are a number of objectives we are hoping to achieve through the implementation of the new 20mph speed limit in this area. These include reducing average speeds and reducing the number of road accidents and injury as well as improving air quality and reducing noise levels.”

The pilot will consist of 20mph ‘entry’ signs at the road boundaries of the speed limit area and speed limit ‘reminder’ signs and road markings. Speed humps do not form part of the scheme.

The 20mph speed limit will be monitored through residents’ surveys and traffic speed surveys. These surveys will help to determine whether 20mph speed limits in residential streets are right for Southampton to improve road safety and the local street environment. The results will also determine whether the 20mph limit should remain in place permanently in the pilot area.
