Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald wins considerate constructor award

Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald, which operates and maintains Area 4 on behalf of the Highways Agency, has been recognised as a considerate constructor.

The organisation, which provides project management, design, construction and consultancy for the upkeep and improvement of motorways and key trunk roads in Kent, Sussex and small parts of Surrey and Hampshire, has been given a gold award by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS), a national construction industry initiative that aims to raise the industry’s image.

Under the company scheme organisations are monitored against a robust Code of Considerate Practice, designed to encourage and recognise best practice. The Area 4 team scored well beyond statutory requirements across all categories.

The CCS auditors commended the team for the introduction of a ‘Zero Harm’ smart phone app which allows employees to report actual and potential causes of accidents by delivering photographic evidence directly to the depot and they commented that it “raises reporting procedures to a new level.”

They also recognised the Area 4 team for an initiative which used artwork created by employees’ children to remind them of their personal responsibility to work carefully and return home safely each day.

Roadworks undoubtedly inconvenience local communities but we are keen to minimise our impact on people’s lives as much as possible and to ensure that our people go home safely every day.”
