Balfour starts £2.5m surface dressing scheme

Balfour Beatty highways teams have started a £2.5m surface dressing programme across Warwickshire this week.

Work has started in the Stratford area and will later move onto Warwick, Rugby, Nuneaton and Bedworth, and North Warwickshire districts.

The programme involves the application of a bitumen binder and stone chippings to the road surface to help prolong its serviceable life.

More than 270 sites, totalling 1.4 million square metres, are to be treated which include all categories of road from ‘A’ roads to residential cul-de-sacs.

The programme is scheduled to be completed by September.

Cllr Peter Butlin, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways and Transport, said: “The surface dressing programme treats around 150 kilometres of road and is successful in cost effectively extending the life of our highways.

"Delivering the work through our unique contract provides a more efficient service and greater value for money to the taxpayer.

“This is the first time that Warwickshire’s innovative five-year highway maintenance contact has enabled the delivery of some highway services for Coventry City Council.

"Through this an additional 35 roads in Coventry have been surface dressed by our contractor in recent weeks.”
