Beverley southern relief road opens

A new relief road in Yorkshire has been officially opened.

The town’s southern relief road in Beverley – known as Minster Way – is a 1.7 mile stretch of new road that will carry 13,000 vehicles a day around the town, cutting congestion and improving traffic flows. The new road runs from the A164 Victoria Road roundabout around the south of Beverley to the A1174 Hull Road.

It road is a key part of the £22 million Beverley integrated transport plan, one of the largest capital investments ever undertaken by the East Riding of Yorkshire council, which the Department for Transport has supported with £16.3m funding.

Roads Minister Robert Goodwill, who officially opened the road, said: “I know this new road is much needed and has been long awaited by the town. Beverley’s popularity has grown but the road network, with its narrow medieval streets and one-way system, is unable to meet growing traffic demands. This new southern relief road will help improve residents’ lives by cutting congestion and improving traffic flows in the town centre.

“The £16.3m we have put into this scheme shows that the government is serious about investing in the infrastructure the country needs to tackle congestion and boost economic growth.”
