EXCLUSIVE: Show to reveal M6 in action

A behind the scenes documentary will reveal how the Highways Agency and its partners work tirelessly to keep the M6 open and traffic flowing.

Tentatively titled ‘The Motorway: Life in the Fast Lane’, the show sheds light on the challenges facing Highways Agency staff, Amey, Skanska, the Central Motorway Police Group and Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency amongst others.

Last winter the Highways Agency let film crews from The Garden Productions follow every aspect of its work on the M6 in the Midlands and the results are due to go out on BBC2 early next month.

Film crews followed construction staff, traffic officers, litter pickers, emergency responders, control room operators and wildlife champions as they carried out their duties in the Midlands between November 2013 and March 2014.

The show features crews repairing potholes, roadside barriers and the large concrete pillars supporting Spaghetti Junction, alongside footage from last year’s winter operations, the multi-million pound project to improve Catthorpe junction, numerous on-road incidents including suicides, and police vehicle checks.

The end result is an entertaining, engaging four-part documentary, which gives the public a rare glimpse of the huge amount of work that goes on ‘behind the scenes’ to keep the M6 running smoothly.

The Motorway: Life in the Fast Lane is currently scheduled for broadcast on BBC 2 in September. You will be able to read more about it in the October issue of Highways Magazine.
