Further collaboration for roads maintenance in Scotland

Scotland’s roads authorities are considering new ways of delivering maintenance.

The work, which is part of the Scottish government’s efforts to continue to collaborate with local authorities on shared maintenance services, follows on from the National Roads Maintenance Review.

An extra £2.5 million has been invested by Transport Scotland in repairs to the trunk road network this financial year, bringing the total investment on resurfacing and patching across Scotland’s trunk road network in 2014/2015 to £57m.

Transport Minister Derek Mackay said: “The Scottish government is committed to improving roads maintenance and we need to consider all of the options available to help us do that.

“We will continue to investigate opportunities to collaborate with local authorities on shared services across the country to improve road maintenance, wherever possible, and to deliver savings and improved ways of working.

“We are firmly committed to investing in our infrastructure, despite the significant cuts imposed by the UK government and we are doing all we can to maximise every penny of our road budget.

“The extra £2.5m recently invested in maintenance will allow our operating companies to identify and repair defects and to continue in their efforts to allow motorists to go about their day-to-day business.”
