Hertfordshire CC approves £34m highways repair programme

Hertfordshire County Council has approved £34 million worth of highway improvement schemes.

During 2016/17 a total of £34.1m will be spent on improving Hertfordshire’s 3,000 miles of roads after the council’s cabinet gave the go-ahead. It will be spread across road repairs, foot and cycle paths, drainage, transport links, safety and the highway locality budget.

Planned work schedules include maintenance to roads, bridges and pavements, and improvements such as tackling safety problems, reducing traffic congestion and assisting pedestrians.

Terry Douris, cabinet member for highways, said: “Hertfordshire’s roads carry a great amount of traffic, both private and commercial vehicles, as well as cyclists. We share our residents’ views that well-maintained roads and footpaths are extremely important.

“We have a commitment to providing a strong, resilient and successful economy supported by an efficient and reliable transport network with appropriate infrastructure.

“It is therefore crucial for us to ensure that our resources are used efficiently and effectively. Our works programmes are carefully calculated using an asset management system which has gained national recognition.”
