The 2017 JCT Traffic Signals Symposium will again provide a platform for high quality papers, supported by an exhibition tailored to signals and ITS professionals.
The event takes place at the University of Warwick on 20 and 21 September, with leading practitioners, manufacturers, suppliers and academics presenting a strong papers programme.
The format will be the same as previous years and will include a Symposium programme, a specialist exhibition and plenty of networking opportunities.
Following a number of visits to the Symposium to discuss the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions (TSRGD), Sally Gibbons of the Department for Transport returns to talk about progress towards the new Traffic Signs Manual: Chapter 6 on Traffic Control.
Designing for buses and bus priority will be well covered this year with papers from Brent Collier and Stephanie Cooper of Sheffield City Council, and Henry Axon at Transport for London (TfL).
In their paper ‘Sprucing Up Your ITS’, Mr Collier and Ms Cooper will discuss bringing together the best of linked MOVA, SCOOT and Fixed Time Urban Traffic Control using data from traditional loops, bus and tram travel time and above ground congestion detectors via a SPRUCE/STM strategy.
Mr Axon will discuss how TfL has increased bus speeds in inner London by allowing priority at junctions and reducing delay using their iBus software.
TfL will also be represented by Abigail Preen, who will be introducing its Real-Time Origin Destination Analysis Tool (RODAT), which has been developed alongside Deloittes. This innovative ITS solution combines analysis and visualising information from hundreds of roadside sensors with other sources of big data to support real-time congestion management giving TfL the ability to distinguish between critical and local journeys to quantify actions and support decisions.
Devrim Kara of PTV, the winner of last year’s prize for ‘Most Forward Looking Paper’, will attend again this year to offer thoughts on how we can make more of our existing road capacity by combining predictive information with real-time traffic signal plan management.
MOVA will figure strongly on the programme again this year with papers covering the latest developments and the application of advanced detection techniques.
Last year’s recipient of the prize for ‘Most Thought Provoking Paper’, Keith Manston from Siemens, will explore the safety and system challenges that have been addressed by Siemen’s Plus+ system, explaining how it can deliver significant savings in on-street implementation and retain maximum ongoing availability under a wide range of fault conditions.
Modelling will be a strong topic with papers from Alan Shailes of Cormac, Chris Kennett from Green Signals and Pete Sykes at Transport Simulation Systems, who will look at two ends of the spectrum of modelling traffic signal junctions and networks.
