JPCS has been awarded the contract to supply and install new 20mph speed signs for Warrington Borough Council.
Following a successful 18 month pilot scheme, the council is rolling the 20mph programme out across the borough and signs will be installed on identified residential roads in Warrington.
The signage for the 20mph speed limits will be installed by highways maintenance contractor JPCS. The company will be using a foundation solution - Groundscrew - for around half of the signs, which will provide more flexibility across the speed zones. Groundscrew is a robust and sustainable alternative to traditional concrete bases and will allow the signs to be moved easily if required. JPCS was appointed to deliver the contract, following a thorough tender exercise this autumn.
Councillor Linda Dirir, executive board member for highways, transportation and climate change at Warrington Borough Council, said: “This new scheme will have huge benefits for the town and we hope everybody will get behind it. Not only does it mean increased safety for road users and residents, but with lower speeds it gives residents the confidence to use other modes of travel and encourages walking or cycling. People can also enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits.
“The 20mph rollout will also help us to work towards our environmental targets to reduce emissions and cost by promoting awareness and encouraging the adoption of other means of travel.”

Figures from the Transport Research Laboratory have shown that lowering urban and residential speed limits to 20mph can decrease child pedestrian accidents by up to 70% so we’re pleased about the opportunity to contribute to making roads safer in Warrington – something we are passionate about.”
Warrington Borough Council is one of 44 local authorities in the UK who have committed to implementing 20mph as the default speed limit for residential streets.
