Kier's Moving through May charity event set to break records

Kier's charity event 'Moving through May' is well on its way to achieving its target of £100,000 for good causes this month, having already received more than £91,000 from generous donations.

Moving through May is a distance challenge to raise money for the Kier Foundation, which supports charities under a match funding initiative. Since its formation in 2012, the Kier Foundation has donated more than £3m to good causes throughout the UK.

This year its Moving through May event is 'bigger than ever' Kier said, and has divided the infrastructure giant into five regions. Supporters and employees have been asked to work together to move a baton across as many sites, depots and offices across these regions as possible, in any non-motorised way - helping boost their health as well as raise cash for charity.

Participants can also clock up 'virtual distances' by taking on any of the following challenges:

  • Kier Tain to Kier Penzance – 1,157 km
  • Kier Newcastle (Hebburn) to Kier Belfast – 335 km
  • Kier Cardiff to Kier Birmingham – 153km
  • Set your own goal – Whether you're aiming for 50km or pushing for 1,000km, this is your journey.

To get involved you simply register here and choose a challenge - picking from the three set distances or setting your own goal (minimum 50km). You can enter individually or create a team.

Among the top figures in Kier taking part this year is James Birch, MD of Highways at Kier Transportation, who recorded a moving, humorous and somewhat red-faced video outlining his own efforts and encouraging donations to support the delivery of food parcels for those in dire need. Mr Birch is running 5km a day every day through May - totalling 155km.

Mr Birch said: 'By making a donation in these constantly changing and challenging times you are helping to support the awesome work that charities do when their services are needed more than ever.'

You can donate to Mr Birch's fundraising here:

Participants can track their daily progress using a fitness tracker app or enter their kilometres onto the fundraising page manually, and see how far they get on the leaderboard.

Kier also advises participants to tell everyone about their challenge to help raise funds. There is no minimum or maximum amount for a donation but at least £25 is suggested.

There are prizes to be won, so click here to register or find out more.
