New guidance on reducing street clutter

New guidance on reducing street clutter has been launched with input from the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE).

‘Street Design for All’ is a guidance document written and produced by the Public Realm Information and Advice Network (PRIAN).

The document is intended to help local civic societies and community groups to work with their highway authority to reduce street clutter and make a real difference to their own streets.

IHE chief executive Stephen Palmer said: ‘Street Design for All’ is an updated guidance booklet for anyone with an interest in quality street design and reducing street clutter.

?Unnecessary street furniture and signs not only make streets unattractive places but also increase costs for local authorities. Cluttered streets can also be confusing for drivers and pedestrians and affect safety.

?Summary guidance laid out in an easy to read booklet style such as this encourages local authorities and other stakeholders to work with communities and provides helpful advice on good design and tackling clutter on their streets.

?The advice contained in Street Design for All should be read in conjunction with the Manual for Streets and the other good practice guidance made available on this issue by the DfT.?
