Research competition for student engineers

Second year undergraduate civil engineering students from across Scotland are being offered the opportunity to win a place on The Road Maintenance Research Working Group.

The competition is being run by the Scottish government and is sponsored by the Scottish Roads Research Board.

Three ambitious students will be selected for the unique summer placement that will offer practical work experience and a valuable insight into the day-to-day work of the teams responsible for maintaining Scotland’s strategic and local road network.

The group will be set a variety of tasks focusing on researching innovative solutions to address the engineering challenges to planning and carrying out maintenance on Scotland’s diverse road network.

On successful completion of the summer placement, the students will be awarded with an opportunity to visit the Forth Road Bridge for an engineering master-class and a jaw dropping trip to the top of the towers.

The Minister for Transport and Islands, Derek Mackay, said: “The Scottish Roads Research Board is a fantastic example of roads authorities working collaboratively to develop innovative ways of working. I am delighted that the Board is opening its doors to our future civil engineers. Road maintenance is a great topic for the students to focus on – there will always be roads in need of repair and there will always be a demand for road maintenance engineers.”
