Road worker killed on A21

A road worker was killed on the A21 near Sevenoaks last night after being crushed to death by a lorry while carrying out repairs.

The 20-year-old man from Tonbridge was pronounced dead after the accident which happened just before midnight.

Police sealed off the south-bound carriageway from the A25 sliproad to Morley’s roundabout while investigations were carried out. A diversion remained in place until 10am this morning (16 January).

The section of road where the accident happened is currently undergoing roadworks, and had been closed to traffic at the time of the incident.

Joint venture Balfour Beatty Mott MacDonald (BBMM) operates and maintains Area 4, which includes the A21, on behalf of the Highways Agency.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said: "We can confirm that a road worker, working on behalf of the Highways Agency, has died in an incident overnight on the A21 near Sevenoaks in Kent.

"Our deepest sympathies are with this person’s family, friends and colleagues at this time.

"We are liaising with Kent Police and the Health & Safety Executive to help their investigations and while these continue it would not be appropriate to comment further."

Kent police confirmed that officers were called at 11.59pm on Thursday 15 January to a report that a heavy goods vehicle on the southbound carriageway of the A21 had crushed a man.
