Staffs paves the way for Burton and Stretton

Staffordshire County Council has started work on a £500,000 scheme that aims to provide an improved gateway into Burton and Stretton.

The highway authority is carrying out drainage, kerbing and ironworks along with major resurfacing and re-marking of the road at the A5121 Claymills interchange / Derby Road in Burton. Crews are also clearing footpaths, cutting back hedges and repairing damaged barriers.

The council said the improvement scheme is part of a wider £30m investment it is making into its roads over the next two years, which aims to improve major gateways into Staffordshire and is on top of an extra £5m to fix highways defects across the county.

David Williams, cabinet member for highways and transport, said: ‘This is a well-used section of road in the town and a vital scheme that will provide an improved gateway into Burton and Stretton.

‘Good roads are important for residents, motorists and of course the economy and it is important to invest in keeping them safe and well maintained. This is why we recently announced an extra investment of £5m in pothole repairs, on top of an extra £30m investment in larger repairs and resurfacing of roads and junctions over the next two years.’

The scheme began on Monday (4 September) and is expected to take around four weeks to complete.

The majority of the work is being carried out at night, from 9pm to 5am, and a signed diversion route will be in place throughout the works.
