TRL has released its latest Quarterly Research Report, with a special focus on connected and automated vehicles (CAVs).
The Quarterly Research Report provides a comprehensive overview of TRL’s most innovative projects and reports between January and March 2016, with key highlights including the launch of the UK Smart Mobility Living Lab @Greenwich, the progression of GATEway – the £8 million project to trial automated vehicles in Greenwich, and projects to examine the infrastructure and data requirements of automated vehicles as well as accelerate validation and development of new technology.
Professor Nick Reed, academy director at TRL, said: "The move towards connected and automated vehicles presents us with many opportunities to improve mobility, accessibility, safety and sustainability. But it also presents many challenges. For example, who will be responsible should something go wrong? And how can we ensure systems respond appropriately? The research TRL is conducting in this area, will be critical in overcoming these challenges and ensuring the next generation of vehicles integrate safely and effectively into our cities and roads.”
TRL is working on a number of connected and autonomous vehicle projects with a current portfolio of projects in excess of £25m including GATEway, MOVE_UK, and Atlas. Current CAV partners include Innovate UK, EPSRC, Bosch, Jaguar Land Rover, Royal Borough of Greenwich, UMTRI, Telefonica, Shell, CEDR, RSA, Direct Line Group, Westfield, Heathrow and Oxbotica.
