Transport for London (TfL) has announced today that it is investing more than £87m across London boroughs and the City of London over the next year to make the streets ‘safer, healthier and greener’.
This funding represents a 9% (£7.2m) increase from last year’s allocation, which TfL says reflects ‘the importance of the boroughs’ work, alongside TfL and other partners, in delivering the Mayor’s Transport Strategy’.
The investment will be used to create new cycle routes, more pedestrian crossings and support School Streets safety schemes, 'as part of TfL’s three-year agreement with London boroughs'.
Will Norman, walking and cycling commission, said: ‘Creating greener and safer streets in London will enable more people to choose active travel to get around, and this is vital to achieving the Mayor’s environmental targets.
‘This funding for boroughs, a significant increase on last year, shows the Mayor’s commitment to improving walking and cycling in London, and we look forward to continuing working with boroughs to build a better, safer and greener London for everyone.’
TfL’s director of strategy, Christina Calderato, added: ‘Boroughs play a vital role in improving local transport networks, which is why we’re really pleased to be significantly increasing our investment with them this year.
‘This investment will enable boroughs across the capital to tackle road danger, increase the reliability of our bus network and contribute to the continued expansion of Cycleways in London. We will continue working closely with every borough to show that, together, we can create cleaner, safer roads across London that encourage people to walk, cycle and use public transport.’
The TfL funding for 2025-2026 is the first tranche of a three year package agreed with the London boroughs.
The Boroughs have outlined plans that will include up to 95km of new cycle routes, 222 new School Streets schemes and up to 265 new pedestrian crossings – although TfL said that all are subject to funding in years to come – with 20km of new bus lanes also planned as part of the programme.
