Mobile Visual Information Systems (MVIS) is helping to keep Nottingham moving whilst the city undergoes a major programme of redevelopment works.
The temporary intelligent transport system (ITS) solutions provider is working in partnership with Nottingham City Council to help manage traffic during a major upgrade of the city.
Nottingham has become one of the UK’s first city councils to employ a temporary ITS traffic management solution, incorporating a number of products and integrated control room service.
MVIS’ temporary, solar powered ITS traffic management solution is one of its largest city council partnerships to date. It was designed to help minimise congestion and journey disruption during Nottingham’s £1bn infrastructure regeneration project, which includes both extensive upgrades to Nottingham railway station and traffic remodelling at major junctions on the A453, the main route into the city.
The temporary ITS solution incorporates variable message signs (VMS) to inform road users of roadworks and suggest alternative routes. It also features CCTV to monitor the flow of traffic throughout the affected area. All equipment is solar powered and therefore does not require preliminary groundwork.
The company works in partnership with the council to provide a traffic control room service, using live CCTV data to inform the VMS messages, which can be instantly updated from any internet-enabled device.
Nottingham City Council’s technical officer Steve O’Sullivan said: “MVIS’ temporary ITS solution is proving an effective means of traffic management during this massive project.
“The VMS are highly visible, so even locals who in our experience tend to ignore diversion signs are taking notice of them, and their portability means that they can be easily repositioned as the roadworks move.
“This compares very favourably with our previous experience of major roadworks projects during which only static signs were used.”
MVIS’ sales manager Graeme Lee added: “Nottingham is leading the way in the use of sophisticated, integrated, temporary ITS solutions to minimise congestion and journey disruption during major infrastructure development.”
