VolkerLaser to strengthen Reading Bridge

VolkerLaser has been awarded a £2 million contract by Reading Borough Council for the structural strengthening of Reading Bridge.

Reading Bridge supports a three-lane highway and two footways over the River Thames and forms a central part of the strategic transport network for the Berkshire area. The bridge links the centre of Reading, located on the south bank, with the Caversham area on the north bank.

Built in 1923, this spandrel arch structure requires essential strengthening works in order to extend its lifespan and prevent it from being subject to further weight restrictions and frequent closures, causing further congestion to the busy town of Reading.

VolkerLaser will be delivering carbon fibre reinforcement works to the top and soffit of the bridge deck to increase carrying capacity, in addition to general concrete repairs and parapet works. A foamed concrete infill is to be placed in the approach on the south side, in addition to the carriageway undergoing resurfacing measures; a refurbishment that will include waterproofing, footway and kerbing works.

As part of the programme, which commenced on the 13 October, a series of off-peak lane closures has been scheduled, including some night-time lane closures in order to carry out works under the centre line of the carriageway.

Work is expected to be completed in June 2015.
